What Is A Feuerzangenbowle?

A Feuerzangenbowle is a traditional German alcoholic hot drink similar to Glühwein (mulled wine). Mulled wine is actually the base for the drink!

On top of the Glühwein bowl, a rum-soaked big sugar cone is set on fire and drips into the mulled wine giving it a delicious flavor.

The Feuerzangenbowle is a German Christmas and New Year’s Eve tradition.

Once you have prepared the mulled wine as the base of the German fire bowl, you need a few things to make the Feuerzangenbowle happen:

Feuerzangenbowle Rum

For Feuerzangenbowle you typically use Stroh Rum. Stroh Rum is an Austrian rum with a very high percentage of alcohol.

A high percentage of alcohol is needed so you can actually set it on fire. A fire tongs punch wouldn’t work with a spirit that has less than 40-45% of alcohol. It just doesn’t burn.

In the US, the most available Stroh Rum has 160 proof. It is labeled as Stroh 160 (and Stroh 80 in Europe).

Any other rum with at least 125 will work fine too.

Feuerzangenbowle Sugar Cone

If you make a Feuerzangenbowle in a big bowl, you use a big sugar cone that is soaked in rum and lit on fire over a big pot of mulled wine.

Alternatively, you can make a smaller Feuerzangenbowle in a single cup with one or two sugar cubes.

Feuerzangenbowl is served both ways at German Christmas markets. So either one way is absolutely fine and authentic.

Tongs For Sugar Cone

You need a special sugar cone tongs to place the sugar cone on, so it can drop into the mulled wine while burning.

If you choose to make the Feuerzangenbowle over a single mug, there are smaller sugar tongs that fit over the cup. Alternatively, a small fork can work too.

Please be careful and take precautions when you light the alcohol-soaked sugar on fire!
