Nestled in the tropical forest of Costa Rica’s Rincon de la Vieja National Park in the Guanacaste province, Rio Negro Hot Springs offers various thermal pools along the river run.

In total there are 10 thermal pools built on the riverbank ranging in temperature from very warm to very hot.

To cool down after the hot springs, guests can take a dip in the refreshing river.

A highlight at the hot springs is the hanging bridge that spans over the “Black River” Rio Negro and the pools.

Visiting Rio Negro Hot Springs

Day Pass

If you just come for the day, you can buy a day pass one site if availability allows.

Rio Negro is quite a popular destination, so you gotta have a little luck to not have many people there.

Rio Negro Hot Springs Entrance Fee

The hot springs are free for guests of the nearby hotel Hacienda Guachipelin that is also located in Rincon de la Vieja National Park in Guanacaste.

The entrance fee to the Rio Negro hot springs for non-hotel guests is 25 USD for adults and 15 USD for children under 13 years old.

Facilities

There are changing rooms, lockers, and bathrooms on-site at the entrance. A towel will be provided for you for the duration of your stay.

Hours

The hot springs and mud bath at Rio Negro open daily at 9 am and close around 6 pm.

Rio Negro Hot Springs Trail

To get to the actual hot springs and the river you will have to walk along a 350 meters long path in the woods surrounded by the lush Costa Rican jungle.

One at the hot springs pools you will also cross a hanging bridge that spans over the pools and the river. From up there you will have a birds-eye view of the main hot spring pool.

Tours To Rio Negro Hot Springs

There are several combo tours exploring the Rincon de la Vieja National Park and ending the day with a relaxing soak in the natural thermal pools at Rio Negro.

On the full-day Guachipelin Adventure tour, you will do zip lining, horseback riding, and river tubing and end the day full of activities at the Rio Negro hot springs.

If you are more into hiking there is a Rincon de la Vieja Volcano Hike & Waterfall tour which ends the day at the thermal baths.
