We have spent an extended weekend in Canada at British Columbia’s Whistler Village to go skiing at Whistler Blackcomb mountain. In this post we share our experience and impressions of Whistler Ski Resort and our weekend at Whistler Village.

OUR WEEKEND AT WHISTLER VILLAGE

SKIING WHISTLER BLACKCOMB MOUNTAIN

With 37 lifts and over 200 marked runs, Whistler Blackcomb is the largest ski resort in North America and the best thing to do in Whistler in winter. Skiing was obviously the number one reason why we came to Whistler, especially since Whistler Blackcomb is part of Epic Pass.

Whistler Blackcomb hosted the 2010 Winter Olympics. You will find the iconic statues of Ilanaaq, the mascot of the 2010 Olympics, located on view points across mountain tops of Whistler Blackcomb.

SKI & SNOWBOARD RENTAL IN WHISTLER VILLAGE

If you don’t bring your own skis or snowboard you can easily rent all the equipment at ski rental places in Whistler Village. The ski resort also offers ski and snowboard rentals, but we found it cheaper to rent them at one of the stores in the village.

There are quite a few rental places in Whistler Village, just walk around and check their prices and see if they have what you need. This is what we did. You should take care of it the day before you want to hit the slopes, so you can start skiing right away the following day. You can most likely already pick up the equipment in the evening then, when people come back from the mountain to return their rentals.

PEAK TO PEAK GONDOLA

Peak 2 peak gondola from Whistler to Blackcomb Mountain

The Whistler Blackcomb ski resort is a merger of formerly two separate and rivaling ski resorts, Whistler and Blackcomb resort. The famous peak 2 peak gondola now connects the two side by side mountain tops.

The peak 2 peak gondola held the world record for the longest free span (3.03 km / 1.88 mi) between towers. Though, since 2017, the Eibsee Cable Car at the Zugspitze in Germany exceeds it by 189 meters.

Taking the peak 2 peak gondola is a must do when in Whistler. The ride is pretty cool, but a little scary at the same time. The highest point above ground is at 436 meters high. It reminded us of taking the gondola up to Aiguille du Midi in Chamonix, France.

APRÈS SKI IN WHISTLER

Après Ski in Whistler reminded us a bit of Après Ski in Europe. A cool bar with a view is the Roundhouse Umbrella Bar at Whistler Mountain. Down in Whistler Village the party with live music was popping at The Longhorn Saloon right by the gondolas.

AWESOME RESTAURANTS IN WHISTLER VILLAGE

Our favorite restaurants in Whistler Village were the french restaurant Crêpe Montagne and Japanese ramen place Ohyama Ramen. We have dined there several times and can highly recommend these two restaurants at Whistler Village. Tip: Make a reservation or come early, these restaurants are very popular and you probably have to wait otherwise.

WHERE TO STAY IN WHISTLER VILLAGE

Our winter weekend at Whistler Village
Strolling through Whistler Village

We stayed in two hotels in Whistler Village. Felipe arrived a few days earlier and stayed in a sleeping pod at Pangea Pod Hotel. It’s a new an hip hotel for younger people and offers good and affordable accommodation. We can highly recommend it. We went back a few more times for some hot Glühwein at their bar.

When it was the two of us, we stayed at Whistler Peak Lodge. The hotel was on the more affordable side and located directly in the village of Whistler, which was important for us.

Check out our recommendations below for hotels in Whistler Village, split into different categories and budgets.
